Yes! I Want To Pass My Test!TIP #1 – Abstract reasoning tests assess your problem solving skills by often getting you to look for patterns or sequences. Practicing sequence or rule finding questions can greatly improve your ability to answer abstract reasoning questions quickly. Remember to practice a wide variety of question types including non-verbal, inductive, and spatial reasoning. Being able to manipulate shapes in your mind can be very tough, but with practice, you can easily improve. It can also be a good idea to practice with some puzzles, such as those found in newspapers or in a puzzle book. We recommend this puzzle book for logical improvement and fun!
TIP #2 – Like many different psychometric tests, managing your time is essential. Keep a check on how many questions you have remaining and the time you have left. A typical abstract reasoning test will last 40 minutes. If you get stuck on a question, it’s nearly always better to leave it and move on to the next question. You can always return to it if you have time at the end.
TIP #3 – Once you have worked out the logical reasoning (or pattern/rule) that you need to answer a question, it is likely that many of the same question types in an abstract reasoning test will follow a similar rule. In other words, you need to find out what the test provider is asking of you to work out their questions. Do this as quickly and as early on as you can to make answering other questions that little bit easier.
TIP #4 – Sometimes it’s not always easy to find the rule and you can find yourself getting stuck. There are a couple of tips for this, firstly, bear in mind that many abstract reasoning questions include colors, or complex/unusual shapes deliberately to distract you or to make a question look harder than it is. The rule may likely not have anything to do with those aspects, and in fact, it could be as simple as the order in the way the shapes rotate, or touch the edges of the box they are in. Secondly, try working out the rule backwards. For example, look at the answer options you have and see what patterns or consistencies you can spot and then work from there. This might just give you that breakthrough moment!
TIP #5 – Practice the types of questions you are likely to face again, and again. Certain test providers will use particular shapes in their questions – arrows, lines, triangles, etc. It’s important that you practice test packs that use a wide variety of shapes in their questions to enable you to be as best prepared as possible.
